چکیده

Existing Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) are unable to track affective states of learners. In this paper, we focus on the problem of emotional engagement, and propose to detect important affective states (i.e., ‘Satisfied’, ‘Bored’, and ‘Confused’) of a learner in real time. We collected 210 hours of data from 20 students through authentic classroom pilots. The data included information from two modalities: (1) appearance which is collected from the camera, and (2) context-performance that is derived from the content platform. In this paper, data from nine students who attended the learning sessions twice a week are analyzed. We trained separate classifiers for different modalities (appearance and context-performance), and for different types of learning sections (instructional and assessment). The results show that different sources of information are generically better representatives of engagement at different sections: For instructional sections, generic appearance classifier yields higher accuracy (55.79%); whereas context-performance classifier is more accurate for assessment sections (63.41%). Moreover, the results indicate that expression of engagement is person-specific through both of these sources, and personalized engagement models perform more accurately: When personspecific data are added to the training set, on instructional sections, 85.44% and 96.13% accuracies are achieved for appearance and context-performance, respectively. For assessment sections, the accuracies are 75.25% (appearance) and 90.24% (contextperformance). When only person-specific data are employed during training, similar accuracies are achieved even with very limited data. Analyzing Learner Affect in a Scenario-Based Intelligent Tutoring System

Scenario-based tutoring systems influence affective states due to two distinct mechanisms during learning: 1) reactions to performance feedback and 2) responses to the scenario context or events. To explore the role of affect and engagement, a scenario-based ITS was instrumented to support unobtrusive facial affect detection. Results from a sample of university students showed relatively few tr...

Teacher and Learner in Humanistic Language Teaching

Since ‘the development of whole person’ was brought to the focus of attention by humanist psychologists as a central concern in educational theory, affective variables have been assumed to have a significant share in the learning process that goes on in a pedagogical setting. Exploring the Relationship between Learner EEG Mental Engagement and Affect

This paper studies the influence of learner’s affective states on the well established EEG-mental engagement index during a problem solving task. The electrical activity of the human brain, known as electroencephalography or EEG was registered according to an acquisition protocol in a learning environment specifically constructed for emotional elicitation. Data were gathered from 35 healthy sub...

Predicting Learner Answers Correctness through Brainwaves Assesment and Emotional Dimensions

We want to explore the relation between affective states, brainwaves and the learner answers during a multi-choice test questions. 24 participants were used in our experiment. While we were measuring their brainwaves, we asked them to answer 35 questions related to the 7 texts they read, for the first time, the day before. During the experiment, the participants can rate, at any time, their emo...

E-Learning and Affective Student's Profile in Mathematics

This paper is concerned with the personalisation of teaching/learning paths in mathematics education. Such personalisation would exploit the research results on the connection between the affective experience of the student learning mathematics and his/her success or failure in mathematics, which produces the learner’s attitude towards mathematics. We present a model for the learner’s affective...
